To scale its core telehealth offering, Happier Living needed to build a comprehensive mental healthcare platform that could handle the significant technical challenges associated with healthcare compliance, insurance processing, and provider management – across all 50 states. 

Vynyl joined Happier Living as an embedded engineering partner shortly after its launch, ultimately architecting and engineering a fully serverless AWS architecture that connects patients with providers nationwide, while efficiently handling the complex requirements of modern healthcare delivery.

1. On-Demand, Seamless Scalability with Serverless AWS Architecture 

We implemented a completely serverless architecture using a wide range of AWS services, eliminating the need for traditional infrastructure management while meeting stringent healthcare security requirements. Our custom architecture provides exceptional scalability and cost-efficiency, with minimized AWS burn rates across all environments.

2. Healthcare-Grade, Compliant Auditability with Event-Sourcing Database Architecture

We also implemented an event-sourcing pattern for the database architecture, creating a complete audit trail for all system activities - a critical requirement in healthcare applications. Rather than relying solely on a central ledger approach, the system maintains a journaling system where events are stored for full auditability and used to build point-in-time objects.

This architectural choice proves invaluable during compliance reviews and audits, providing Happier Living with comprehensive documentation of all system activities and data changes. 3. Complex Appointment Management for Multi-State Telehealth 

One of the most technically challenging components we built was the appointment scheduling system, which handles the complex regulatory requirements of interstate telehealth along with multi-API synchronization. The system manages provider licensing by state and navigates the legal requirements around appointment location when patients and providers are in different states, all while staying synced with the AthenaHealth EHR system. 

This sophisticated scheduling system has transformed Happier Living's operational efficiency, eliminating potential compliance risks while dramatically improving the patient booking experience. What was once a labor-intensive, error-prone process requiring manual verification of provider licensing and availability is now a seamless, automated workflow that both patients and providers find intuitive and reliable.

4. Multi-Portal Ecosystem with Third-Party Integration: Connecting Healthcare Stakeholders

We also built three interconnected portals sharing a unified data foundation while delivering tailored experiences for patients, clinicians, and administrators. This ecosystem integrates seamlessly with critical healthcare services including Athena (EHR), Salesforce (CRM), NMI (payment processing), and Nirvana (insurance clearinghouse).

This interconnected ecosystem has eliminated data silos that previously created friction in the patient journey and administrative workflows. By unifying these experiences while maintaining appropriate access controls, Happier Living has achieved unprecedented operational visibility and coordination across all aspects of their business, from patient acquisition through care delivery and billing.

For patients, the portal enables provider searching with advanced filtering (by state, appointment times, gender, provider attributes), appointment management, and secure access to their care sessions. The clinician portal provides daily calendar access and appointment booking capabilities during patient sessions, operating with replicated data to ensure performance and reliability. The administrative portal completes the ecosystem with comprehensive oversight capabilities.

5. Performant, Comprehensive Cybersecurity

We implemented healthcare-grade security throughout the platform, with all data encrypted in transit and selective encryption at rest for sensitive information. The system uses AWS-managed encryption keys and JWT-based authentication through Cognito, with a least-necessary permissions model for all service interactions. The security implementation has been validated through extensive penetration tests.
