Overview

Early identification of reading difficulties creates life-changing opportunities for young learners. When a prominent healthcare research institution approached Vynyl to create a universal screening tool for California's diverse student population, we recognized the opportunity to translate cutting-edge neuroscience research into practical educational technology.

Vynyl's engineering expertise helped build a digital platform that completes assessments in just 10-15 minutes per student, while providing immediate results and intervention recommendations.

By building the entire product, from infrastructure to front end, Vynyl enabled researchers and educators to focus on the science of reading assessment, helping make early dyslexia detection accessible across California's school system.

Client Background

The Multitudes platform originated from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Dyslexia Center, backed by significant state funding. Traditional approaches typically don't identify dyslexia until third or fourth grade, which is typically too late to prevent compounding academic and social-emotional challenges.

Multitudes was envisioned as a solution that would enable identification in kindergarten through second grade, based on the latest neuroscience research.

Key Technical Components

1. Enabling Adaptive Assessment with the CAT Algorithm

Vynyl successfully integrated with the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) algorithm calibrated by the Multitudes team. Working within the constraints of the existing R-based implementation, Vynyl's engineers built the necessary interfaces to connect this powerful academic assessment approach with a user-friendly digital platform.

The system leverages the CAT algorithm to present test items that provide maximum diagnostic information based on previous responses. Our team developed expertise in the statistical models to collaborate effectively on solutions and feature improvements, helping translate academic assessment techniques into a practical tool for classroom use.

2. Ensuring Continuity with the Event/State-based Messaging Architecture

Vynyl developed an innovative messaging architecture that combines event-based and stateful approaches to maintain robust connections between student and administrator devices. This architecture addresses the challenging network environments found in many schools while preserving assessment integrity.

The system includes data loss minimization strategies through network request retries and progress tracking, allowing assessments to continue even when connectivity is intermittent. By saving progress incrementally and handling network failures gracefully, our implementation ensures that educators can conduct assessments without disruption, preserving both the testing experience and valuable assessment data.

3. Self-Serve Assessment Management System

Vynyl created a comprehensive management system that gives assessment experts direct control over content without requiring technical intervention. This powerful tool enables rapid measure development, minimizes errors by reducing handoffs, and improves reliability by providing the ability to test changes in a live environment before publishing.

The system maintains a detailed history of changes while providing flexible access controls based on user role, grade level, and language. By returning control to the content experts who understand the science, this system dramatically accelerates the development and refinement of assessment measures while maintaining consistency and quality.

The platform supports students taking assessments in multiple languages, with certain tasks designed to accept responses in either English or Spanish, respecting the natural language patterns of bilingual students.

4. Engaging Young Learners with a Game-like Assessment Interface

Vynyl designed and implemented an intuitive assessment interface that balances standardized measurement with an engaging experience for young students. The interface presents complex assessment tasks in an approachable format, with careful attention to clarity, ease of use, and maintaining student focus.

The system incorporates appropriate visual elements to maintain student engagement while preserving the scientific validity of the assessment measures. With thoughtful UX design and responsive implementation, Vynyl created an interface that requires minimal training for educators to administer, allowing them to focus on supporting students rather than managing technology.

The platform also supports audio recording of student responses for later evaluation by specialists, with future potential for automated speech recognition scoring.

5. Integrated Administration Platform: Connecting Assessment to Intervention

Vynyl built a comprehensive administration platform that provides immediate access to assessment results and connects directly to intervention resources. The system includes individual student reports, class-wide dashboards, and intuitive data visualizations that help educators quickly identify trends and plan appropriate interventions.

Beyond the core assessment functionality, Vynyl created key integrations with CRM systems like Zendesk and educational platforms like Clever, alongside custom tools for rostering management. These integrations streamline school onboarding and reduce support staff requirements, making large-scale deployment practical across California's diverse school system.

Technical Infrastructure

Multitudes operates on a secure, scalable cloud-native infrastructure designed for statewide deployment. The architecture centers on two key scaling components: Hasura's websocket service for real-time communication and a content delivery network implemented through Heroku applications with automatic scaling capabilities.

Vynyl created a robust system that handles network failures, saves progress incrementally, and allows for stopping and resuming assessments when needed. Data security is maintained through end-to-end encryption and careful attention to educational privacy requirements.

Partner Impact

Vynyl's technical implementation has enabled the Multitudes team to focus on their core expertise in reading science and assessment development. By handling the technical challenges of building a web-based platform, creating an intuitive user experience, and developing system integrations, Vynyl has accelerated the project's development and expansion.

The product is designed to reduce the need for technical support staff, minimized training requirements for educators, and simplify the onboarding process for new schools. The easy-to-use interface and robust backend systems have allowed the platform to scale efficiently during validation with over 12,000 students across 70+ schools representing California's diverse population.

The platform is scheduled for statewide launch in both English and Spanish in fall 2025, with potential to transform literacy outcomes for 1.3 million California students in kindergarten through second grade.
